Once again, the New Year is here! With the parties and all the celebrations, we all think about those wonderful things we want for ourselves in the coming year. Some of us want a better body, some more money, or maybe you want a better sex life. But most of these “thoughts” are just wishes. Usually there is very little action or true commitment that comes with our New Year’s resolutions. This year make the decision to act and not just make a wish. The tradition of resolutions at the beginning of every year comes from the Babylonians. Each year they tried to fall in favor with the gods/goddesses by making promises to them to show their devotion and worthiness. There was true motivation in their commitment because they not only wanted the gods to see them, but they had to outdo all others to earn that spot among the favorites.

So how do you find that kind of commitment without invoking the goddesses Paylay or god Zeus to shower you with endearment?

It truly is a simple formula; you must want to change more than to stay where you are. The idea of where or what you want must have such fire connected that you feel motivated every day, and you return every day to that commitment. There are many ways to reignite the fire within. Some include making vision boards. Yes, this sounds cheesy and have been used by every new age guru, but as my father used to say, “keep it simple stupid” (the navy would be proud). So, try the vision board but also truly take time to connect with what this change you are wanting will mean in your life and what pain you will have if you do NOT make this change.

In addition to visualization and vision boards, set yourself up for success this New Year with these simple steps:

1) Aim for only one New Year’s Resolution. We generally want to improve in several areas of our life (money, love, health, career, spiritual), but choose what would make the most significance in your general well-being or what you are most passionate about changing.

2) Write down at least 5 reasons what this change of habit would bring into your life. Don’t be superficial… dig deep. For example, if you want more money, then write down how that would benefit you, your family or even support causes that you believe in. Not that you want a new pair of shoes to impress your friends.

3). Pick three or four realistic and measurable goals for yourself. If you want to lose 50 lbs., then measure out how much is that per month and what simple things you can do daily (change out sugary breakfast for healthy one or go for a 10-minute walk on your lunch break).

4) Know that if you fall, you will get up again. Have a plan of self-comfort just in case you have a bad day. Know that one bad day or bad decision isn’t the end.

I highly suggest getting a good support group and talking about your goals with friends and family. This helps reignite your fire when you talk in detail about what you’re doing and adds accountability. As a certified Hypnotherapist and Life/Sex Coach, I can tell you accountability is the most important asset.
