If you’re from the Bay Area, you’ve likely heard of WooWoo Monroe. If not, you’ve gotta get a load of this queen. She’s a whole lot of… well…  she’s just a whole lot. We caught up with her for a few minutes before one of her shows at Renegades Bar in San Jose as she was putting on her iconic eyes and corralling the other queens backstage.

Your CIRQ-US show has been a staple in San Jose for quite a while.

Yes. It’s been five years and CIRQ-US is still going strong. We do two shows a month – the second and fourth Saturdays at Renegades Bar in San Jose. And the show is different every time. I’ve built quite a repertoire of material.

What can people expect?

A campy raunchy romp. In San Francisco, there are a lot of glam drag shows. My show is more performance drag that falls into the alternative category. We push the limits and don’t play it safe. When you think you’ve gone too far, go farther!

You’re regularly showcasing new talent. Where do you find the other performers?

I find girls by going to shows and seeing them perform. Just because you have 100,000 Instagram followers doesn’t mean you can own a stage and command a room.

Where did you get the inspiration for your look?

So many great performers – Peaches Christ, Nina Flowers, Sasha Velour to name a few. Now my followers know these eyes, so I can’t stray too far. And I put together outfits that are unique,  arresting, and fashion forward. I love playing this character. I can get away with a lot as Woo Woo!

Where did the name come from?

The classic formula: first pets name, Woo Woo, and the street I grew up on, Monroe Ave.

What’s the next step in your drag career?

Well I hope to keep my CIRQ-US show going for another five years at Renegades. And I’d love to travel the world doing drag. I love meeting people. Of course, it would be a career highlight to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Any final thoughts for our readers?

Yes. Support gay-owned establishments. We need to stick together and keep these businesses alive!
