Canada has become the world’s second country after Uruguay to legalize recreational cannabis nationwide. Canada has much to offer to a modern traveler, from beautiful mountain ranges to arctic lands, vibrant cities and rich cuisine. Additionally, there are plenty of dispensaries and cafes popping up; cannabis tourism is the next big thing for Canada.

  1. NETHERLANDS

Next on the list, the Netherlands. The Netherlands is world-famous for its stunning canal cruises and for the oldest “coffee shops” in the world. For those not privy to the lingo, “coffee shops” are special places where the sale of cannabis for personal consumption is legal by Dutch law. Since the early 70’s, millions of cannabis-lovers from all over the world visit the Netherlands, especially Amsterdam to partake in their rich and full-flavored cannabis culture. Still today, Dutch police are directed to disregard “coffee shops” selling marijuana.

  1. URUGUAY

In 2013, Uruguay, a small country nestled between Argentina and Brazil, made history when it became the first country in the world to fully legalize recreational marijuana. According to the law, locals can enjoy cannabis freely, but it is illegal for visitors to purchase cannabis. WAIT, there is no need to panic… you can always find a friendly Uruguayans willing to help with your purchase. Alternatively, visitors can sign up for a local cannabis tour, which provides travelers with ample product to enjoy. For years, Uruguay has been overshadowed by its neighboring countries, but is now becoming a popular travel destination. If you are searching for a low-key tourist destination, Uruguay’s laid-back rhythm and stunning beaches is just the place for you.

  1. SPAIN

In their cannabis legalization, Spain has adopted a distinct strategy from the Netherlands. Travelers who want to experience the cannabis culture in Spain will have to join a “club”. Cannabis social clubs in Barcelona can look like an Amsterdam “coffee shop”, but there is a distinct difference. For example, Dutch “coffee shops” only require that adults (18+) present a photo ID to gain entrance and purchase products. However, to gain entrance to these Spanish “clubs”, you must first register for a paid membership. Every “club member” is required to pay “dues” for quality cannabis, and employee expenses.

The clubs are low profile and generally hidden from public eye. They are sometimes hosted in the apartment of a local “member”. The club rules differ from region to region and are not permitted by some provinces. Check your local travel guides for specific locations where cannabis “clubs” are allowed by the regional government. According to a friend in the region, the Catalan administration that governs Barcelona may eventually enact legislation that requires a two-week waiting period for tourists who want to become “club members”.   1. JAMAICA

Cannabis has been linked to Jamaica for centuries. The Jamaican Rastafari faith uses cannabis as a sacrament, but the reggae movement has also popularized the country’s connection to cannabis by musicians like Bob Marley. In Jamaica, there is a prominent cannabis grower’s community. The Caribbean environment is good for the crop and now local government wants to create medical cannabis fields that are designated solely for medical studies and government sponsored products.

In 2015, a series of reforms were enacted which reflected the country’s tolerance of cannabis. Possession of less than two ounces (56 grams) is now classified as a petty crime. Locals can apply for a medical marijuana license with a valid prescription for any medical practitioner. Jamaica is a beautiful country with a variety of islands, beautiful beaches and vibrant rainforests by which you can enjoy a smoke.
