California's LGBTQ Media Source! * PRINT * DIGITAL * WEB * SOCIAL MEDIA * EVENTS *

So-Cal based OutAt.TV officially enters the LGBTQ digital revolution with glitter, booze, celebs, and a lot of heart.  If there has been any positive effects of COVID, it has to be the fact that a wave of new faces from the community has the opportunity to be seen and share their stories – all thanks to technology.  With smartphones and Zoom, anyone could be a producer and a performer.  With having to quarantine and chill, digital streaming consumption is through the roof.  You can attend Prides around the globe, watch a drag show from a small town in Ohio, or watch an interview with your favorite gay celebs, all with the click of the mouse.  Because of this digital revolution, anyone can enter the game, and grassroots LGBT media distributors can now compete with the big boys.

After a whole season of canceled County Fairs, the team behind Out At the Fair (gay days at the County Fair) sprang into action.  With a Rolodex of drag queens and emcees, connections to content producers, and a built-in fanbase, they created OutAt.TV – a collection of independent, FREE, LGBTQ produced and performed content now available on Roku and AmazonFireTV.  OutAt.TV is a grab bag of glitter and gay with highlighted shows including San Diego’s popular podcast, Who Invited Her?, Murder’s A Drag with Aura Van Dank – highlighting queer true crime stories of community members taken too soon, celebs and cocktails with On the Rocks with Alexander, Monday’s Are A Drag international drag show, drag reality show The Queens of Queen City, Sassy Saturdays with Navy vet and drag queen Shania Satisfaction, and the lively Drag Race Roundup with Southern California’s Erica Foxxx.  The library is growing each week with more personalities and shows joining the ranks.  Did I mention it was FREE?

The man behind the madness of the OutAt.TV team is William Zakrajshek, also known as Will Z, who was named among the 40 Under 40 by San Diego Metro Magazine.  No stranger to the LGBT nightlife community, he is also a Top 40 DJ and a fixture in the Hillcrest club circuit.  His first major project, the Hillcrest Social App, was originally meant to connect the San Diego gay community to the latest in activities and trends in Southern California.  It grew in scope and rebranded as NowTrending App to include all of SoCal and beyond.  His other baby, Out At the Fair, became an annual event in 2012 and has produced a day of LGBT live performances as part of the County Fair festivities in California, Oregon, and Washington, with more States on the way (after COVID).

We chatted with Will from his home as his chickens screeched in the background (he has a chicken coop!):

How did the idea of OutAt.TV come about?

– We have always wanted to build something for TV from the Hillcrest Social team. There is so much great talent in our community, produced by community members and it is just lost on YouTube or Twitch. 2020 has been like no other year and we took this opportunity of having some free time to build something new.

What is your take on the LGBT revolution happening digitally?

– I think it is cool to see people embrace technology and bring their talents online. It’s really allowing some to explore new avenues and showcase themselves in ways not possible in person. We are excited to have a platform ready for them to stream!

Queens of Quarantine

You have personally been affected by the cancellation of live Pride events – as a DJ and a producer of Out At the Fair – what positives, if any, can you see from this situation?

– Personally, CV19 has devastated the nightlife industry and the fair industry. My current DJ career is on hold until venues can have in-person entertainment or we can start remote in music video requests at Flicks. Out at the Fair® has had its own hurdles to overcome after a record-breaking year in 2019 with a 1 million brand reach and has 9 locations in 3 states making us the first LGBTQ+ national festival. Right now, this Fair season is 100% postponed and we are hoping for the best in 2021. Unfortunately, some locations have already postponed their Fair’s in Feb 2021 so we brought our OATF® merchandise to Etsy to help us sustain costs until we can be at a Fair location again.

With all the tough times there has for sure been some good that has come from all this free time. It has forced us to try new things, like Out at the Fair® live stream this past June and us trying to develop a new platform for our community like OutAt.TV.

What does Pride mean to you this season, different than any other years of Pride?

– Pride has for sure changed for us this year, instead of throwing massive Pride parties in San Diego or celebrating with our LGBTQ+ families at the Fair we have found Pride in bringing our community online in a new way. Pride this year is showing support for each other even though we cannot be in person. There are many ways to help a community move forward while still dealing with current world events.

What can viewers expect to see on OutAt.TV?

– Shows brought to you by community members, produced by the community, and handling topics for the LGBTQ+ community.

Why is this FREE???

– OutAt.TV is free because it’s important to make this community content available to everyone. If you have an android device, Amazon FireTV, or Roku TV you can find it for free!

What sets OutAt.TV apart from other LGBT streaming services?

– The network isn’t run by CBS, LOGO, or any of the other large networks which allows us to take larger risks and give people a chance. You don’t have to be on any list to have a show great enough for OutAt.TV. Just create original content, be consistent with production, and be ready to take risks!

Tell me about your OutAt.TV founding team.

– OutAt.TV is founded by the same team that produced Out at the Fair® and the development team from Hillcrest Social which includes Charlie Rosenberg, Caleb Wilkins, Daniel Castaneda, and myself.

What are your current guilty pleasure binge-watch shows on TV during quarantine?

– Of course, we watched “Tiger King” but now that “Big Brother” is back it feels like summer and “Down to Earth” with Zac Efron on Netflix is a much watch. But I always have dreamed to live on an island so the show, “Island Renovation” on HGTV is really good.

What does the future hold for OutAt.TV?

– There is a big, bright future in store for OATV! We are currently getting ready to launch to the Apple App Store, testing 24/7 “Live” TV, and having more original content from the community. Our goal is to bring a diverse set of topics and shows that everyone can be a part of.
