One of the most unique entertainers on the scene today is the quirky TaMMie Brown. While she had been a widely-recognized figure on the Southern California circuit, her appearance on Season 1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race launched her onto the international stage. Beyond the retro outfits, expressive makeup, quick-witted comments and lip sync acts, TaMMie performs her own original music. Her first album Popcorn contains unique and laugh-a-long songs such as Clam Happy and the surreal Ballad of Tiger Lily. And the songs are just the tip of the iceberg. Just wait until you see the YouTube videos!

We had a lively chat with TaMMie to learn a little more about this creative artist and find out what she’s got up her glove next.

GED: How would you describe your style as a performer?

TB: It’s performance art with music. There’s a very retro feel with present elements – even a bit bohemian. I perform from the heart and have a magic power to draw in the audience. I like to perform and make everyone feel good. I get lots of compliments from the fans after a show, even when I get thrown a curve ball. Entertaining is in my blood.

GED: Tell us about your original music.

TB: I write my own lyrics and recently self-published along with my creative partner Rod Barroso. I also write my own poetry which are songs.

GED: When is your next album coming out?

TB: It should be out in February. It’s called Hot Skunxs and features the songs Disco’s Undead and Rain or Shine.

GED: What’s been the career highlight to date? And what’s next?

TB: Working with Michael Catti, my guitarist, and Kelly Mantle. We’re in the band Rollz Royces. Another highlight has been meeting and becoming friends with the fabulous Lady Bunny. As for the future, I’m pushing on to further my career as a recording artist, or ‘drag queen musical entertainer’ as I like to say.

GED: What does it take to last in this business? Any advice for newcomers?

TB: Perseverance, determination, good friends and good fans. Drag is each individual’s creation. You’ve got to be true to yourself and perform from your heart – not for the fame and not for the money. It’s not about the coin. It’s about pleasing the audience.

GED: What would be the ultimate career success?

TB: To fill a stadium! A global 50-staduim tour.

GED: Where can our readers find out where you’re performing and what’s new with TaMMie? Any upcoming shows?

TB: I’ve got lots of shows in the Southern California area coming up: Ripples in Long Beach, Micky’s in West Hollywood and Snatch at The Menagerie in Riverside. I’m taking it international in February and going to perform in Chile. The info is on my website taMMieBrown.net. I’ve also got a Facebook fan page and Instagram titled PlanetTaMMie with quite a following.
