This months anime is an adaptation of a sound novel which focuses on music, sound effects, and the story itself. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni or When the Cicadas Cry follows the lives of  Keiichi Maebara, Rena Ryugu, Mion and her twin sister Shion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou, and Rika Furude. children of varying ages that, at some point each meet horrible fates, usually a couple of times. Every year for the past four years, on the evening of the Watanagashi Festival, or Cotton Drifting Festival, in the village of Hinamizawa, one person has been murdered, and another has gone missing, and this year the body count is rising. One thing I wish I had known before watching the show is that they are in some kind of time loop that causes them to relive the same few weeks in the summer of 1983 over and over again, each time having its own ending. These adorable, yet at times creepy kids deal with some true to life issues. So don’t be fooled by there super cute smiles and sweet exteriors, because some of them are hiding serious mental problems beneath. You can watch the entire first season with subtitles on Hulu.
