The thunderous beats of New Yorker Tony Moran have resonated throughout clubs and arenas around the world, and have dominated the Billboard dance charts for decades. Tony Moran is also an accomplished singer and songwriter, and he has released a number of independent singles and CDs throughout his 30 year plus career.  GED had an opportunity recently to interview the top-ranked DJ and Grammy nominated producer and remixer, who will be one of the headlining DJs for the White Party Palm Springs.

GED:  You wear many hats, so to speak – Producer, DJ, Remixer, Songwriter… your love of music is obvious.  Which aspect of the business gives you the most satisfaction?

TM:  That is such a tough question to answer because I have such great passion for all the roles I play. But I have to admit that songwriting is my favorite because it is just something that you cannot force out of you. Not every idea or melody has to work. It’s part of the process, but when you feel something click or hear it, the level of satisfaction goes beyond words.

GED:  Take us through your creative process in putting down a new track… What part of the process do you find the most challenging?

TM:  Choosing the first music instrument to use. Whether it’s a piano or synthesizer, these instruments along with the drums help to define the foundation of where you will go next. So I do not commit to one immediately. Even if an instrument sounds obvious to feature, I am constantly testing different things.

GED:  Is there a particular track(s) that you are looking forward to remixing?

TM:  Yes. Martha Wash’s new single, “I’m Not Coming Down”. Though I did not write it, Martha is one of the writers of her song and there is something so special and identifiable that she brings to it. I am going to build a musical temple around it for all of us.

GED:  You have DJ’d many major LGBT dance parties – with WPPS 2014 coming up.  What are looking forward to most about WPPS 2014?

TM:  I’m looking forward to celebrating the party’s big anniversary. Think about it. Jeffrey  Sanker created a concept that has made such a huge impact on gay culture. His events have a level of production that is amazing in every category. Jeffrey let me bring a full orchestra because he encouraged bold ideas. I respect that someone had a dream and made it happen. I will turn it out for Jeffrey!

GED:  Do you have a new EP on the horizon?

TM:  Yes. Tony Moran UNLIMITED will be dropping soon.

GED:  Do you remember the first record you ever bought?

TM:  Yes, it was “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang. I know, I know, it’s not the coolest record but I recovered quickly and soon after purchased “Romeo and Juliet” by Alec R Consandinos. The most brilliant adaptation ever done!

GED:  Everyone has a hidden talent – what’s yours?

TM:  I know how to hem pants with a needle and thread.  My parents owned a dry cleaner and all their five children had to work there… and be “A” students. This was before child labor laws!  Ergo, I had to hem pants. I got good at it.

GED:  What do you listen to in your “spare” time or while in the car?

TM:  Dance music when I want to be motivated and love songs when I just want to breathe.

GED:  Where can our readers find you?
