Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

by Josh Jacquez

Originally illustrated by Eiri Shirai and written by Ao Jūmonji Hai to Gensō no Gurimugaru or Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash play out just like a role-playing game (RPG) from the very beginning. “Awaken” are the first words Haruhiro hears and is the only thing he remembers  before waking up in a strange land. Lucky for him, or maybe not, he isn’t the only person to have no memory of life before Grimgar. Much like an RPG each character must choose one of the classes – tank, healer, mage, or attacker. While all characters must start out as trainees in the local army, eventually they train in their respective jobs, gaining abilities specific to their role on the team. Money must be earned in order to pay for lodging, clothes, and repairs to armor. Death is permanent in Grimgar as the team eventually finds out in battle. At times someone will make a reference to items in the real world, but then almost as soon as it’s mentioned they have no idea what they were talking about. Beautifully drawn characters and an engaging story line make for a great watch. You can watch the series with subtitles on Hulu.
